Built by Fouad's grandfather around 1895 from the limestone of the hill it stands on, with the red-tiled roof and the triple-arched window that every house in the village has and every Haddad insists is the best one. Teta lived here from her wedding until her last summer.

What it was like
Cold in every season except August. The outside stair was the only way up to the bedrooms, so the whole family has memories of running up it in the rain. The window was where Teta sat to watch the road for cars she recognised.
Who lived there
Four generations of Haddads, from about 1895
Teta and Fouad, every summer from 1953, and all year after 1990
Every grandchild, every August
What happened to it
Still in the family. Nadia and Georges share it, argue about the roof, and agree that nothing in it is to be thrown away, including several things that should be.
